John N. Friedman is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy whose fields are Public Finance and Political Economy. His research aims to produce rigorous empirical evidence that is tied to theoretical models to inform public policy decisions.  Most recently his work has focused on the long-run effects of education and the economics of taxation, although he has also written papers on gerrymandering and health economics.  His work has appeared in both top academic journals and in media outlets such as The New York Times, and it has featured in policy debates including President Obama's 2012 State of the Union address.  This year Friedman is on public service leave working as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy within the National Economic Council (NEC) in the White House.  Before joining the Kennedy School, Friedman was a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar of Health Policy at the University of California at Berkeley. He has been a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics, an A.M. in Statistics, and a B.A. in Economics, all from Harvard University.
