Profile

Lewis M. Branscomb is Public Service Professor of Public Policy and Corporate Management in the Aetna Chair Emeritus. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of California, San Diego. A former director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (1951 to 1969) and Vice President and Chief Scientist of IBM (1972 to 1986), he served as chairman of the National Science Board from 1980 to 1984. The author of books on technology policy and early-stage high-tech innovation, he was cochair of the National Academys project on Science and Technology for Countering Terrorism (2002). His AB in physics is from Duke University, summa cum laude (1945), and his PhD degree in physics is from Harvard University (1950).
