Face Value Campaign


The Human Rights and Social Movements Program has established a research partnership with The Face Value Campaign, a California-based organization that seeks to gain support for LGBT people, rather than just gaining LGBT rights within a political cycle. 

Our society’s long-held bias against homosexuality causes injury to – and prevents progress towards equality for – the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.  These prejudices have negative social and health impacts that are not solved simply by expanding civil rights.  LGBT youth, adults, and their loved ones are in desperate need of a strategic paradigm shift and a long-term plan to change public attitudes and behaviors once and for all.

Recently founded by Julie Davis and Anne Marks—two movement veterans with a combined background in activism, academia, communications and comprehensive campaign development—Face Value seeks to inspire such a paradigm shift and help to create a society that fully embraces the LGBT community and its values. Its actions include:

  • Exposing the underlying social and psychological root causes behind the persistent prejudice that confronts LGBT people and their families in their day-to-day lives.

  • Broadening the definition of “equality” from one narrowly defined by legal rights and protections, to one more broadly based in the human rights of LGBT people.

  • Fully integrating LGBT expression and experience into American life to ensure LGBT people and their families are fully accepted – and literally taken – at face value.

The primary scope of Face Value’s work is to: (1) aggregate new and existing data on bias related to sexual orientation and gender identity; (2) develop and execute a cross-disciplinary strategy that includes a multi-year public education campaign to counteract LGBT stigma; and (3) disseminate research findings to allies and partner organizations to enhance existing LGBT advocacy work with new messaging and tactics for media and in the field (workplaces, schools, places of worship and other institutions).

To achieve all of this, Face Value has partnered with the Carr Center Human Rights and Social Movements Program to launch the LGBT Stigma Project, whose board of advisors includes:

Roberta Achtenberg, former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Clinton administration.  Achtenberg was the first openly lesbian or gay public official in the United States whose appointment to a federal position was confirmed by the United States Senate. She has worked with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and the San Francisco Center for Economic Development. Achtenberg is a former member of the Board of Supervisors for the City and County of San Francisco (1990-1993). She holds a JD from the University of Utah College of Law, taught at the Stanford Law School, and was Dean of the New College of California’s School of Law. She also founded the National Center for Lesbian Rights. She is the immediate past chair of the Board of Trustees of the California State University.

Maria Blanco, Executive Director of the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Race, Ethnicity and Diversity (Warren Institute) at the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt) Law School. Blanco formerly served as the executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area. Blanco has also served as the National Senior Counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, staff attorney at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and staff attorney at Equal Rights Advocates, where she successfully litigated pivotal civil rights cases, such as Davis v. San Francisco, which brought women for the first time into the San Francisco Fire Department; and Castrejon v. Tortilleria La Mejor, which established that undocumented workers are covered by federal anti-discrimination laws.

Ben Boyd, Executive Vice President at the Washington, DC, office of Edelman, a global public relations and strategic communications firm, with more than 3,200 employees in 51 offices worldwide. Prior to Edelman, Boyd was Director of Communications for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and, before that, BarnesandNoble.com.  He was also Senior Vice President at Weber Shandwick, another PR company.

Dorie Clark, founder of Clark Strategic Communications. Previously, she served as the New Hampshire Communications Director for Howard Dean's presidential campaign, and was the Press Secretary for former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich's campaign for Massachusetts governor.  As a journalist, she wrote for the Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, Commonwealth Magazine and the Boston Phoenix, where she won two New England Press Association awards. Clark has taught campaign management, media studies, and government at Emerson College, Tufts University, and Suffolk University.

Dr. Patrick J. Egan, PhD, Assistant Professor of Politics and Public Policy at New York University.  Egan specializes in public opinion, political institutions, and their relationship in the context of American politics.  He is co-editor of the volume Public Opinion and Constitutional Controversy, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2008.  Egan served as an Assistant Deputy Mayor of Policy and Planning for the City of Philadelphia under former Mayor Edward Rendell. He was a visiting scholar at Princeton University’s Center for the Study of Democratic Politics in 2006-07.

Dr. Renée Richardson Gosline, PhD, Assistant Professor of Marketing at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Gosline's research interests include understanding brands as symbols of dynamic group boundaries, omnivore consumer behavior, consumer empowerment, and social network analysis. Prior to joining academia, she worked at Leo Burnett and at LVMH Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton. Gosline earned her Doctorate from Harvard Business School, and completed the Master's coursework in Sociology at Harvard's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Gregory M. Herek, PhD, Professor of Psychology at U.C. Davis and the nation’s foremost expert on LGBT stigma. Herek has published more than 85 scholarly papers on prejudice against lesbians and gay men, anti-gay violence, AIDS-related stigma, and related topics.  He is a past recipient of the American Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest and the Kurt Lewin Memorial Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. He has testified before Congress on antigay violence and on military personnel policy, and has assisted in preparing amicus briefs for numerous court cases related to sexual orientation.

Dr. Pamela Ling, Assistant Professor in Residence, General Internal Medicine, at the University of California at San Francisco’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. Pam studies how to improve tobacco control media campaigns and other tobacco control interventions for young adults using tobacco industry marketing strategies and market research methods. Prior to her tobacco research, she completed a postdoctoral research fellowship on AIDS prevention.  She received her medical degree from UCSF and Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley.

Chris Maliwat, Director of Product Management for Personalization at Netflix.  He was previously VP of Product Management of Vuze and Senior Product Manager for eBay.  Prior to eBay, Maliwat was co-founder and Senior Architect for V2 Group. Chris was also the co-founder and Director of the Interactive Services division of USWeb/CKS.  He became the chief web strategist for the last six weeks of the No on Prop 8 campaign in 2008 and managed a team to create the largest online community in California political history.  Online efforts included social networks, viral video distribution, online ads, and blogger outreach. Chris holds a BS in Symbolic Systems/Human-Computer Interaction from Stanford University and has completed coursework with the Wharton School of Business.

Rev. Irene Monroe, Ford Fellow and doctoral candidate at Harvard Divinity School. A graduate of Wellesley College and Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University, she served as a pastor at an African-American church before starting her PhD. Her writing has appeared in the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Bay State Banner, New England Blade, The Advocate, Cambridge Chronicle, Huffington Post, and Metro News. She has been profiled in O, Oprah Magazine, and, most recently, on CNN's “Paula Zahn Now” and "Headline News."

Dr. Drew Westen, PhD, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at Emory University. Westen wrote The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation. For 20 years, Westen has explored the role of emotions in how the brain processes information. The Political Brain describes how a better understanding of the mind and brain translates into better campaign strategy and more compelling messages on the thorniest issues, from abortion to guns to race. Since the book's publication, Westen has advised or worked as a political consultant for presidential, congressional and state-level Democratic candidates, progressive and labor organizations, and Fortune 500 companies.

Julie Davis Julie R. Davis (principal collaborator) brings a wealth of campaign and organizational experience in the LGBT rights movement to Face Value. She is a veteran of some of the most high-profile state campaigns on the West Coast. She was campaign manager of Oregon’s successful “No on 13” campaign in 1994, still one of the few statewide ballot campaigns ever won by the pro-LGBT side. As the founding executive director of Basic Rights Oregon, Davis transformed the momentum from this successful statewide ballot measure campaign operation into the formation of one of the leading statewide LGBT rights groups. Davis was a finance consultant for the “No on Knight” campaign in California, overseeing the national fundraising efforts, and served as campaign manager and later chief of staff for Oregon’s first openly LGBT state representative, Gail Shibley. Most recently, Davis was the Northern California Campaign Manager for California’s No on Proposition 8 campaign. Davis oversaw public affairs for the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, directed development for the progressive Horizons Foundation and has since served as a consultant on leadership development and issue-based efforts for a wide array of social justice and community organizations serving diverse populations including youth, seniors, sexual and domestic violence survivors, homeless veterans, union members, and residents and workers seeking improved environmental standards and job quality in California’s ports.

Anne Marks Anne C. Marks (principal collaborator) brings a diverse research, organizing and communications background to Face Value. Before acting as a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department and the Democratic National Committee, she conducted research at both the Cambridge University’s Centre for History and Economics and at Harvard University’s Malcolm Weiner Center for Social Policy. She received her Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government where her graduate thesis, a comparative analysis of anti-same-sex marriage ballot initiative campaigns, was nominated for an award. She led the City of Oakland’s violence prevention and prison reentry efforts for several years before leaving to join the No on Proposition 8 campaign in 2008. Recently, she served as a consultant with Equality California, coordinating the Equality Summit, a statewide strategy and networking conference of over 300 leaders committed to winning back the right to marry.
