Finding the way back ‘home’ after conflict?
Measuring and Rethinking Reintegration in Post-conflict Settings
![]() |
Please join us for the second in a series of brown bag lunchtime presentations designed to highlight the work of the Measurement & Human Rights Program Associate Research Fellows.
Over the course of the academic year, these talented scholars have, among other projects, been working to develop and refine publication-quality policy papers focusing on different aspects of measurement's role in the sphere of human rights.
This week, Associate Fellow Aude-Sophie Rodella-Boitreaud will be presenting her research on measuring reintegration after conflicts.
Abstract
Reintegration has become an ever more prevalent buzzword in post-conflict agendas. While it is not a new concept, its fragmented and weak evaluation and measurement have contributed to the persistence of the vagueness surrounding its definition, goals and the reality of what can be achieved from reinsertion to wider development objectives. From the reintegration of ex-combatants through Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) to that of refugees, IDPs and other ‘targeted’ groups, reintegration represents an ever increasing funding and programming priority for all actors involved in post-conflict reconstruction and recovery.
The presentation will look into the evolution of the concept of reintegration, raise questions about our assumptions about what it means to go back ‘home’ and be reintegrated into ‘communities’. Discussion about a more holistic approach of reintegration encompassing all groups concerned and based on impact measurement techniques inclusive of ‘self-reintegrated’ individuals and groups will also be presented.
