"Governance in Pakistan: A Mayor's Viewpoint"

with

Mustafa Kamal
Mayor of Karachi

As Pakistan's largest city and financial hub, Karachi is often in the news for all the wrong reasons including ethnic strife, political violence, and sectarian bloodshed. Indeed, governance in Karachi is a monumental task in light of the broader political and economic instability and security threats facing Pakistan. Yet under the stewardship of Mustafa Kamal - ranked by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the top mayors in the world [0x96] Karachi is enjoying a renaissance. After the screening of a short documentary on Karachi, this panel will seek to address a host of questions through a wide-ranging discussion with Mustafa Kamal, including: 1) what has been the mayor [0x92] s strategy to ensure economic growth and revitalization in Karachi 2) how has he tackled the law and order situation as the Taliban and criminal networks continue to infiltrate and operate in Karachi 3) what opportunities do US and international aid present in terms of advancing his goals in Karachi, particularly in light of the recent signing into law of US legislation tripling non-military aid to Pakistan over five years and 4) how can the international community best support good governance in Pakistan. At a time when Pakistan centrally factors in US foreign policy, understanding Pakistan from the ground up is more crucial than ever. The opportunity to do so with Mustafa Kamal is a truly unique opportunity.
