Afghan Students Initiative Launched
Hosts Inaugural Meeting at the Carr Center
October 23, 2009
The Afghan Students Initiative (ASI) hosted its inaugural meeting at the Carr Center for
Human Rights Policy on Friday, October 23. The newly formed group, which is the first
of its kind in the Boston area, aims to provide a space for local Afghan students to meet
one another and discuss issues of importance to their native country. The first meeting
featured introductions, discussion and debate, as well as long-term planning. Students
representing Boston University, Harvard, and Tufts were in attendance.
ASI was organized in collaboration with fellows and staff from the Carr Center's new
State Building and Human Rights in Afghanistan and Pakistan program, who are
interested in benefiting from the students' experiences and insights on Afghanistan. The
group's first meeting was attended by Carr Center fellows Paul Fishstein, Michael
Semple, and Jasteena Dhillon, each of whom spoke about their research in the region and
engaged in discussion with students.
The next ASI meeting will take place on Friday, November 6 at
the Carr Center.
