Gert Rosenthal (1935 - ) was appointed Guatamala's foreign minister in 2006 and was executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (1988-97). He was Guatemala's permanent representative to the UN (1999-2004) and previously was a member of the Follow-up Commission of the Guatemalan Peace Accords. He joined ECLAC in 1974 as director of its Mexico office and in 1987 was appointed its deputy executive secretary. He was born in Guatemala and educated at the University of California, Berkeley. He has written extensively on development issues including the history of ECLAC included in the UN Intellectual History Project's volume edited by Yves Berthelot, Unity and Diversity in Development Ideas: Perspectives from the UN Regional Commissions.
