About the Walter J. Sullivan Water Treatment Plant at Fresh Pond
The Walter J. Sullivan Water Treatment Plant at Fresh Pond employs ozonation to treat raw water, a latest-generation technology that effectively kills bacterial contaminants and has been found to destroy many PPCP's (pharmaceutical and personal care products). Ozone is used along with traditional treatment processes, e.g. pre-treatment with alum based dissolved air floatation (DAF), biological filtration, chlorination, pH adjustment and chloramination. Together all these processed contribute to the high quality of Cambridge drinking water. In addition to water treatment, the plant operates a 2,500 sq.ft. laboratory. During the tour we will be able to ask questions about all aspects of managing a 24 million gallon a day treatment plant.

About the Field Trip Leader
Susan Redlich has a Masters in Regional Planning from Cornell University, and a Masters of Arts in Population Science from the Harvard School of Public Health. From 2000 until 2009, she was the Manager of the Massachusetts Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership. From 1991 until 2000, she served as the Director of the Citizens' Wastewater Advisory Committee to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority.
