Grants to Harvard Faculty in Land-Water Sustainability

Due date for applications: December 21, 2009

Grants are intended to seed new research and to support projects that contribute to ongoing research that relates to the sustainable use of land and water resources. The next major initiative of the Sustainability Science Program will be the sustainable use of land and water resources in the face of competing demands for food, energy, health, and ecosystem services.  We are particularly interested in the impact of water-related shocks and stresses (e.g., drought, flooding) on food production and food security.  More broadly, we seek to understand the opportunities and limits of agronomic, economic and institutional strategies to adapt to and mitigate the impact of water-related risks.  The scope of this initiative extends from evaluation of the efficacy of traditional strategies for managing water-related risks in subsistence agriculture to a consideration of contemporary options such as weather insurance, the development of drought resistant varieties and land use practices that reduce the covariance of weather and yields, improved prediction technologies to allow adaptation, and irrigation and rainwater harvesting technologies that can be deployed by individual households, small groups of households, or require larger scale cooperation and rely on particular institutions and social norms.  We will also consider interactions between agricultural and non-agricultural water use, including innovative social mechanisms that may control tendencies for both water withdrawal and water pollution to disrupt agricultural systems. Grants are for use for any period between January 2010 and August 2011. Interdisciplinary research approaches are encouraged where appropriate. Grants to Harvard Faculty in Sustainability Science

The Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University's Center for International Development is accepting applications for faculty research grants for use for any period between April 2010 and June 2011. Grants are intended to seed new research and to support projects that contribute to ongoing research that relates to the core concerns of "sustainability science," an emerging field of use-inspired research seeking to advance understanding of the interactions between human and environmental systems, and to apply such understanding to sustainability challenges relating to advancing human well-being and alleviating poverty in ways that simultaneously conserve the earth's life support systems. Proposals to explore sectoral applications of sustainability science in the areas of agriculture, habitation, energy and materials, health and water are welcome, as are applications to integrated regional development. Interdisciplinary research approaches are encouraged where appropriate. The maximum size of an individual grant is $40,000. More information on the application process is available here. A list of faculty research activities that are supported by previous faculty awards can found here.

Sustainability Science doctoral, post-doctoral, and mid-career fellowship

Due date for applications: December 1, 2009

The Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University's Center for International Development invites applications for resident fellowships in sustainability science for the University's academic year beginning in September 2010. The fellowship competition is open to advanced doctoral and post-doctoral students, and to mid-career professionals engaged in research or practice to facilitate the design, implementation, and evaluation of effective interventions that promote sustainable development. Applicants should describe how their work would contribute to "sustainability science," the emerging field of use-inspired research seeking understanding of the interactions between human and environmental systems as well as the application of such knowledge to sustainability challenges relating to advancing development of agriculture, habitation, energy and materials, health and water while conserving the earth's life support systems. This year we will give some preference to applicants who address the challenges related to meeting human needs for water or food/agriculture/land use in the context of sustainable development. In addition to general funds available to support this fellowship offering, special funding for the Giorgio Ruffolo Fellowships in Sustainability Science is available to support citizens of Italy or developing countries who are therefore especially encouraged to apply. For more information on the fellowships application process, click here. Applications are due December 1, 2009.

Giorgio Ruffolo Fellowships in Sustainability Science

The Giorgio Ruffolo Fellowships in Sustainability Science honor the legacy of Giorgio Ruffolo, Italy's first Minister of the Environment (1987-92). Mr. Ruffolo worked to build Italian and European Union environmental programs and, through his charismatic leadership, encouraged many young Italians to pursue environmental careers. Designed to strengthen international networks and capacity in the field of sustainability science, the fellowships enable doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers, and mid-career professionals to spend time one year as Visiting Fellows at the Center for International Development, with preference given to citizens of Italy or developing countries. The Ruffolo Fellowships, established in 2007, are a component of a gift provided by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land, and Sea to create a Fund for Sustainable Development at Harvard.
