The Observatory of Economic Complexity
is a powerful interactive tool of The Atlas of Economic Complexity enabling policy makers, entrepreneurs, academics, students and the general public to map the path of diversification and prosperity for 128 countries.
Why is The Observatory important?
This on-line tool makes our analysis and its underlying data accessible to anyone with access to the Internet. The tool will allow users to explore growth opportunities by country and industry, with the potential to provide input into economic policy and private investment decisions. The analysis may also be used to inform the agendas of development banks in policy recommendations and loan programming; an entrepreneur developing a market plan; an investment promotion agency pitching a new factory, as well as guide other choices we have yet to imagine.
The Observatory can create more than 20 million visualizations, on demand, showing the existing export dynamics amongst countries and the potential new industries available to each location. The Observatory does this by using the Product Space methodology which was incubated at the Growth Lab. Since its launch in October 2011, The Observatory has received 100,000+ unique visits from around the world—all without any promotion.
What we have accomplished
The Observatory is a collaboration between Harvard's Center for International Development and MIT's Macro Connections at the Media Lab.
Working together, The Observatory:
- allows users to look at trends in world markets and specific product trends
- allows organizations to understand competitors in specific markets
- displays ECI (Economic Complexity Index)
- has multilingual support for 16 languages including Spanish, Turkish, Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Dutch, French, Arabic, Hindi, Korean
- has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist and other widely read news media
