Steven Lawry is a senior research fellow at the Hauser Institute for Civil Society, developing a research project with the Harvard Kennedy School Middle East Initiative on the role of civil society in countries undergoing transitions to democracy in the Middle East, including reform of laws governing nonprofit organizations.

An authority on land tenure reform, he was associate director for Africa Programs at the University of Wisconsin’s Land Tenure Center from 1990-92 and was based in Juba, Southern Sudan, from January to September of 2010, assisting the government of Southern Sudan develop a national land policy.

He worked for the Ford Foundation from 1992 to 2005, serving as assistant representative for Southern Africa from 1992 to 1997 and representative for the Middle East and North Africa, based in Cairo, from 1997 to 2001. He was director of Ford’s Office of Management Services in New York from 2001 to 2006. He was president of Antioch College from 2006 to 2007.
