Prof. Michael Kremer and Dr. Amrita Ahuja’s work on providing safe drinking water using chlorine dispensers
Across the world, 3 billion people lack convenient, affordable options to provide safe drinking water for their families. We need an immediate solution to the problem of unsafe water while steps are being made to provide piped and disinfected water to the billions who lack it. Chlorine Dispensers installed at community water sources are a simple new technology that has achieved break-through take-up rates in Western Kenya. Chlorine dispensers deliver a dose of chlorine that kills the pathogens that lead to diarrhea and provides residual protection for up to 24 hours. High take-up rates, low costs, and ease of maintenance all suggest a high potential to scale chlorine dispensers globally.
