This paper was presented at "The Future of Paid Family Leave in Massachusetts: Private Responsibility or Public Good?" a conference held at The Boston Foundation on April 24, 2002 and co-sponsored by the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston and the Center for Women and Enterprise. It explores the legislative options in Massachusetts to provide paid leave for family members to tend to childbirth, elder care, serious illness, and other family emergencies.
The conference, sponsored by the Rappaport Institute and the Center for Women and Enterprise featured keynote addresses by the Massachusetts House Speaker Thomas Finneran and the award-winning journalist Ann Crittenden, author of The Cost of Motherhood.
