Gender Disparities in High-Technology Healthcare

Principal Investigator: Amitabh Chandra, Professor of Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School

Gender disparities in both health care and health have been less well documented than racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare. In this project, Amitabh will use U.S. Medicare data and extend our previously validated research on racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare to (a) measure gender disparities across providers for acute conditions such as heart-attack treatments, (b) measure gender disparities across providers for chronic conditions such as diabetes, and (c) develop an economic framework which allows us to empirically separate explanations based on provider prejudice against women from other competing explanations such as differences in benefit because of physiological differences by gender.
