Curriculum Requirements

Students enrolled in the MPP-MBA joint degree program will spend Year 1 of the program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (HKS) taking MPP core courses, one HKS elective course, and a joint degree seminar. In Year 2, students will be enrolled in the required curriculum courses in the MBA program at HBS, plus the joint degree seminar. The joint degree seminar will be required for all first and second year joint degree students. The course will include integrative lectures and discussions led by joint degree program core faculty, as well as topical presentations by faculty from both schools.

During the summer between the first and second year of the joint degree program, it is anticipated that all MPP-MBA students will pursue a public service or policy-based internship. Similarly, it is anticipated that these students will experience a private sector or "for profit" internship during the summer between the second and third years of the program.

The third year of the joint degree program will be an integrated year. Students will take elective courses at both HKS and HBS, including a required integrative Business-Government course, and undertake a significant Capstone Exercise in their final term.

The MPA/ID-MBA joint degree program differs from the MPP-MBA program in the courses required at KSG in Year 1, and in the elective course guidelines for HKS in Year 3.

During the summer between the first and second year of the MPA/ID-MBA joint degree program, all students are required to have an international development-based internship. In the summer between the second and third year of the program, these students will be encouraged to experience a private sector or "for-profit" internship.
