Writing consultants at the Harvard Kennedy School can help with nearly any writing project, from policy memos to op-eds, research articles, and feature stories, for class or for wider publication. We offer three kinds of services: one-on-one consultations, workshops, and writing groups.
One-on-one consultations during scheduled office hours and by appointment. We encourage HKS students to take advantage of these free private sessions, where we can help you:
• self-edit for clarity, concision, and style
• structure an argument to present your ideas effectively to different audiences
• identify appropriate resources for specific needs (scholarly citation, ESL, etc)
Please make an appointment during office hours through Writeboard. To use Writeboard, enter the password is "write" and click on "edit this page" to add your name to an available time slot.
For appointments outside of office hours or to cancel an appointment, please call or email the consultant directly.
As part of the larger Communications Program, we offer instruction sessions on such topics as:
• writing op-eds and book proposals
• crafting a compelling opening
• maximizing the effectiveness of research
Please see Workshop & Clinic Schedules (link to PDF) for the current dates and times of our sessions.
For HKS students, fellows, and faculty who want to benefit from the feedback of peers with similar writing projects, we:
• put people in touch with each other
• join meetings to give feedback on pieces
• facilitate web and physical gathering space for groups
To inquire about joining a writing group, email Greg Harris, or visit our Writing Consultants' Page.
Contact our Writing Consultants to schedule an appointment, but please keep in mind:
• Last-minute appointments are often not possible, although the consultants try to be flexible. Try to make an appointment well before an assignment is due.
• Writing consultants are not copy editors. They will work with you to improve style, structure, argumentation, citations, use of data, and grammar.
• The consultants are willing to help international students with English grammar on a limited basis, but they are not ESL instructors.
