Harvard Kennedy School Internships and Sources of Funding

Many programs and research centers at the Harvard Kennedy School offer summer internship and/or funding for unpaid internships.

The Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation

- Fellowship in Innovation: places Harvard Kennedy School Students in internships with Innovations in American Government Award winners. 

- Vietnam Program Internship:internship placements available at the Fulbright School in Ho Chi Minh City. 

- Indonesia Research Grants: supports independent research or other forms of study conducted in Indonesia.

The Belfer Center

Environment and Natural Resources Program: offers the Roy Family Summer Environmental Internship, which provides up to three Harvard Kennedy School students with grants for innovative summer projects that ordinary would not offer a salary. This allows returning students to craft their own internship for a public, private or non-profit organization abroad or in the U.S. 

Middle East Initiative: may offer summer funding in 2012. 

Belfer International & Global Affairs (BIGA) Summer Internship Funding: provides grants to Harvard Kennedy School MPP students who have elected to concentrate in the International and Global Affairs area.

The Carr Center for Human Rights Policy

Supports Harvard Kennedy School students seeking to further their interest in human rights through research and first-hand experiences with our summer internship grant program.

The Center for International Development (CID)

Harvard International Development Internship Fund (HIDIF): awards modest grants to first-year Harvard Kennedy School students who undertake summer internships of at least eight weeks duration on development projects in developing countries (other than the intern’s home country).

The Center for Public Leadership

Dubin Fellows Program for Emerging Leaders: offers up to 10 summer stipends to Harvard Kennedy School students to support unpaid or underpaid summer internships or research projects that relate to transformational leadership and public service.

Dukakis Governors' Summer Fellows Program

Provides fellowships in governors’ offices throughout the U.S. Harvard Kennedy School students may apply to the states offered through the program or may apply for an internship opportunity they design themselves within another U.S. Governor's office.

Institute of Politics

Graduate Summer Internship Stipends: Offers four stipends to Harvard Kennedy School students who will be interning with an active political campaign or with a third party organization engaged in political activities related to campaigns.

The Joint Center for Housing Studies

Edward M. Gramlich Fellowship in Community Development: provides master's level students with the opportunity to spend a summer on an analytical project suitable for publication as a working paper.  Fellows receive a stipend and will have the opportunity to present findings in Washington, D.C., at a Policy Briefing.

Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe

Offers small grants to be used towards non-paying (or low-paying) summer internship and/or research projects located in or pertaining to: Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, FYR Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, or Turkey.

Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government Internship Grants

Provides stipends for summer internships in the areas of regulation, collaborative governance, energy and environmental policy, corporate social responsibility, and other areas highlighted on the center's website.

Program in Criminal Justice and Management

Offers summer funding stipends as well as assistance with internship placement in the field of criminal justice policy and management.

Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston

Offers graduate students from several local universities summer internships in key state and local agencies in the Greater Boston area.  Fellows receive a stipend.  Generally, up to five placements are available to Harvard Kennedy School students.

Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy

Lynette Lithgow Summer Internship in Journalism: provides one summer stipend to a Harvard Kennedy School student seeking to gain practical experience within the field of journalism.

Summer Internship Fund (SIF)

Administered through the Office of Career Advancement, this fund provides modest summer grants to first-year Harvard Kennedy School students working in public or non-profit sector internships of at least eight weeks duration with organizations providing no funding or minimal funding.

The Women and Public Policy Program (WAPPP)

Offers several summer internship funding programs to support work on gender and policy issues in NGOs, government, and business settings around the world.

In addition to the Harvard Kennedy School programs mentioned above, Harvard University itself offers a number of opportunities:

Harvard University Presidential Public Service Fellowship Program: supports students across the university pursuing public service summer internships.  The program is expected to be competitive and will offer stipends for graduate students. 

Several Research Centers and Institutes at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) participate in a common application process for Summer Research Travel Grants.  Some are open to graduate students.

David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS): Offers internship and summer grant opportunities. 

Harvard Committee on African Studies: Offers summer travel grants to assist with internship opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa. 

Harvard Gay and Lesbian Caucus: offers a summer fellowship for a student working on a project that will benefit the GBLT community.  
 
Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School: offers a Summer Fellowship Program for students who are doing internships or undertaking summer research projects in negotiation and dispute resolution.

Some Opportunities Outside Harvard:

Conference on Asian Pacific Leadership (CAPAL): offers several summer programs in the Washington D.C. metro area, including a summer scholarship program as well as a program placing interns in several federal agencies.

Jewish American students under the age of 27 interning in or near Israel might think about adding on a Taglit Birthright Trip to Israel -- thereby getting a free plane ticket!
