In coming to the Harvard Kennedy School, you have chosen to better prepare yourself to take a leadership role in helping to solve some of the world’s most pressing public problems. We in OCA are committed to supporting you in discovering the areas in which you seek to make a difference, and in helping you connect with HKS alumni and others who are working in these areas.
In the broadest sense, HKS prepares leaders to have an impact on these areas of global public life:
Under these broad umbrellas, HKS graduates work in a wider array of industries and fields that we in OCA call “Industry Gateways.” Gateways represent the industries, fields and focus areas through which the majority of HKS graduates enter or re-enter the professional world after the Harvard Kennedy School. The Industry Gateways are listed below.
Careers working in public finance, including entities such as the U.S. Treasury, the U.S. Federal Reserve and public side of banks and investment firms.
Careers in economic, social and political development in transitional and developing countries. Also includes careers in human rights and corporate social responsibility in the context of development.
Careers in international relations, including national policy implementation, the intelligence community, diplomacy and advocacy. Also includes careers in human rights and humanitarian assistance in the context of conflict and post-conflict situations.
Careers in critical issues in developing sustainable energy and environmental protection, including the role of corporate social responsibility in promoting and achieving sound policy.
Careers in promoting sustainable economic growth of communities working at the national, regional or local level. Includes housing, transportation policy and the role of social enterprise.
Careers in promoting sound policy, systems and organizations in education, health, welfare and criminal justice. Includes the role of social enterprise.
Careers in serving in federal government agencies as a career civil servant or political appointee. Also includes working in Congress, in the consulting organizations that contract with government and within think tanks and policy institutes that influence public policy and address the reform of government.
Careers in serving as communications and/or marketing professional who seeks to influence policy, legislation or public opinion. Also includes all types of media.
