Code of Conduct

The mission of the Harvard Kennedy School is to strengthen democratic governance around the world by preparing people for public leadership and by helping to solve problems of public policy.

Achieving this mission requires an environment of trust and mutual respect, as well as commitment to truth, learning, and freedom of expression.

The Harvard Kennedy School community has agreed upon the following principles to accomplish this mission:

  • Respect for all members of our community and for the space we share.
  • Professionalism in all things, including the pursuit of intellectual and academic excellence.
  • The recognition of the value of different opinions in our "free marketplace of ideas."
  • Individual accountability for actions inconsistent with this Code of Conduct.
  • Members of the community have a personal responsibility to integrate this code into all aspects of their experience.

Rules of Classroom Conduct

Success in managing a class, especially in a course that relies heavily on class discussion, depends in large part on establishing clear rules of operation, preferably before the class starts. Moreover, it's easier to impose such rules when they are viewed as widely used in many classes. The following seven rules were codified by a member of the Kennedy School faculty and are used in the MPAID core, and have been recommended by the Degree Programs Office as an appropriate code for all KSG courses.

Sexual Harassment Policy

Harvard Kennedy School's sexual harassment guidelines can be found in the publication Tell Someone (Links to PDF).  This defines what is viewed as sexual harassment, how it should be handled, and where individuals can go for assistance.
