Point Allocation

For students enrolled in only a HKS program, the point allocations are as follows:

Program Points per Academic Year
MPP1 300
MPP2 1000
MPA1 700
MPA2 1000
MC-MPA 1000
MPA/ID1 300
MPA/ID2 1000
Non-Degree 300
LKY Fellows 300
PhD1, w/o Master's Degree 300
PhD1 w/ Master's Degree 700
PhD2 1000

Note: For each core course exemption, with the exception of the MPP Spring Exercise, students earn 100 points toward their total yearly allotment.

Part-time students receive one half of their program’s allocation.

Point allocation will vary for students returning from a leave of absence (not related to being enrolled in a combined degree). Please contact the Office of the Registrar for the complete policy.

Combined/Joint Programs

Students who come to the HKS having already been accepted to a combined program will receive the same amount of points as first year students in their program plus 50% of the second year allocation for a total as follows:

Program Points Over Entire Program
MPA/ID 800
MPP 800
MPA2 1200

NOTE: A student's combined bids cannot exceed 1000 points per semester.

For combined degree students who apply to another program while first-year students here, there is a slightly different formula as follows:

Program First Year Last Semester Maximum Total
MPA/ID 300 400 + Carry Over 700
MPP 300 400 + Carry Over 700
MPA2 700 300 + Carry Over 1000

This adjustment aims to combine fairness with the real situation in practice: MPA2 students are more likely to have used points while they were only HKS students (during their first HKS year) than are MPA/ID or MPP students.
