Returning International Students

Funding for Second Year of Study

It is expected that international students have planned their finances for the entire period of study before committing to enroll.  The cost of attendance should anticipate a rise each year by approximately 4% - 6%.

It would be imprudent to plan modest funding for the second year of study for the following reasons:

  • It is unlikely that additional or increased HKS, Harvard scholarship or fellowship funds will become available. In the event that any funds for which eligible students becomes available, the Student Financial Services Office will contact such students to complete the appropriate forms.
  • Students' time will be fully occupied with their studies during the first year and the added stress of researching funding for the second year could hinder their academic progress.
  • Residence within the US during the first year will exclude students from consideration for the majority of fellowship and scholarships, as organizations prefer to fund applicants applying directly from their country of citizenship.
  • Students could be faced with a choice to suspend their studies for lack of funding.

Financial Certification

All international students must certify their funding each year regardless of their immigration status. Returning students will be contacted via e-mail with instructions for second year financial certification in the Spring semester of their first year.

Students can access their certification form with their Harvard Kennedy School intranet username and password.
