The Areas are simply a means of organizing our faculty and curriculum. They do not represent any substantive change to the Policy Areas of Concentration (PAC) or the degree requirements. There are more Policy Areas than Academic Areas, so we have simply assigned each course to an Academic Area in order to make it easier to understand our range of curricular offerings.

The Course Preview sessions, led by each Area Chair, will give a brief overview of the courses offered in the Area with special emphasis on elective and new courses. They will also outline any concentration options (only relevant in International and Global Affairs and, beginning this year, in Social and Urban Policy). Finally, the sessions will include a brief overview of the affiliated research centers, many of which will hold open houses later in the semester. We will hold separate Course Preview sessions for January and spring course offerings, so the fall Course Previews will focus on the fall course offerings.

To make best use of the Course Preview sessions, it is recommended that students first familiarize themselves with the degree requirements and peruse the course descriptions and syllabi that are posted on the HKS Course Listing. Students may also need to check this Course Number conversion table to track the new numbers for some courses.

Faculty have been encouraged to post additional documents such as FAQs and slides that cover course expectations and logistics to the Class Page before or immediately following the first class session. Faculty will also be available in the first few days of classes via Class Page discussion board or posted office hours to answer any questions regarding courses. Finally, Degree Program Chairs and Academic Advisors will be available throughout the year to assist students to understand degree requirements and to make informed decisions regarding course selection and any other questions that may come up.
