APPLICATIONS FOR "FAITH AND LEADERSHIP IN A FRAGMENTED WORLD" (IMM-006) MUST BE COMPLETED NO LATER THAN 12:00 NOON ON DECEMBER 2

UPDATE: NOTE: IMM-006 will now be called "Faith and Leadership in a Fragmented World" and registration will follow a slightly different process and schedule. Registration for IMM-006, sponsored by the Center for Public Leadership, will require applicants to answer a few brief essay questions. Details about the application will be available soon, and will be posted on this site. Since IMM-006 is the only Immersion Activity scheduled for the third week of January, it will not conflict with other offerings so students may register for IMM-006 in addition to any other Immersion Activity and/or all of the for-credit courses except API-506m and PED-501m.

For the past several years, the Harvard Kennedy School has offered a small number of intensive courses during the January session and many students have chosen to return to campus after winter break to participate in these courses. Others have used January to conduct research for their Policy Analysis Exercise (PAE) or Second Year Paper (SYPA), visit family, or just take a well-deserved break.

Students are not required to participate in the January session, but for those who choose to do so, it does represent a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a single activity full-time for several weeks. It’s also a time when students and faculty are free to experiment with creative approaches to teaching and learning such as client-driven projects and/or skill-based workshops. Finally, with the move to a new university-wide calendar, it’s now possible for students from schools across the University to participate in activities together, creating opportunities for cross-disciplinary work.

To capitalize on these opportunities, we are piloting an expanded array of offerings this year that includes three new courses and several non-credit activities designed to complement the knowledge students are building during the term and/or apply this knowledge to real-world problems. Many students will prefer to take a well-deserved break or to work on PAE or SYPA projects during January. For those that do decide to participate in these courses and activities, we hope you will find the experience to be truly enriching.

Course/Activity Preview Sessions

  • Course pages with syllabi for January courses and Immersion Activities will go live by 9:00 am on Friday, October 23.
  • We will be hosting a Course/Activity Preview Session on Friday, October 23 from 2:00 – 3:30 in the Forum where faculty/instructors will be giving very brief descriptions each of the January offerings.
  • Please click this link for a time-table for the Course Preview Session. NOTE: The time-table is subject to change so please check back here immediately prior to the event for the final version.
  • If you wish to drop into the Course Preview Session to listen to the description of only one or two specific courses, please allow extra time before and after the time-slot should the schedule deviate from the precise times listed.
  • We have made every effort to identify a time-slot for the Course Preview Session when most students and faculty/instructors do not have other commitments, but the busy HKS schedule makes this virtually impossible. For this reason we will be videotaping the entire Course Preview Session and posting it on this web page within 24 hours of the conclusion of the event so that students who cannot attend can watch the video at their convenience.

Career Development

Each year, the Office of Career Advancement, in connection with the Alumni Relations and Resource Development Office coordinates a networking event in New York and Washington, DC where hundreds of current students, alumni and major employers come together to discuss and celebrate careers in public service. Since these events occur after most courses and Immersion Activities have concluded, we strongly encourage interested students to take advantage of both opportunities.

January 20, 2010 Regional Networking: New York City
During the day, learn about the United Nations and its agencies, finance, local government, and Manhattan-based nonprofits — spend the evening in a formal networking reception with alumni.

January 21–22, 2010 Regional Networking: Washington, DC

Join panels during the day to learn about the World Bank, other development employers, Capitol Hill, and security organizations — spend the evening in a formal networking reception with alumni and DC-based hiring organizations.

For more information on these events, please watch the OCA website.
