American conservatism as a political movement had a pretty good run from, say, 1980 to 2004. Is it over? What happens next? This course will consider the intellectual history, political trajectory, and practical governing experiences – both failures and successes – of modern American conservatism, with a view to understanding its present condition and possible future. There will be an emphasis on the tension between conservative politics and conservative policies, and between conservative promises and conservative achievements (or the lack thereof), as well as a focus on the tensions among different forms of conservativism. There may be occasional guest lecturers from the worlds of politics and ideas, from both left and right.
Not offered in 2008–09.
