This section of API-102 emphasizes financial institutions and markets and explores the economics of financial intermediation – how financial markets and institutions work to bring together savers and investors. This course will provide a conceptual framework to
analyze financial markets and institutions with an emphasis on public policy. Topics covered will include cost-benefit analysis, applications of net present value and project evaluation, interest rate determination, market efficiency, how financial markets work, Central Banks and monetary policy, exchange rates, economic functions of financial
institutions, moral hazard and agency problems, too-big-to-fail policies, financial crises, and government bailouts. Note: There will be no class on Wed. Feb. 18. Class will be rescheduled during the regular review time on Fri. Apr 3, 1:10-2:30.
