There are no leaders without followers. Yet we obsess about the former to the neglect of the latter. This module is a corrective. It explores the dynamic of the leader-follower relationship, with a particular emphasis on these questions: (1) Why do we fixate on leaders and (largely) ignore followers? (2) What benefits derive to followers from going along with leaders, even when they are badly flawed? (3) How do culture, context, and circumstance impact on the nature of the leader-follower relationship? (4) What are the rights and obligations of (good) followers? and (5) What strategies can/should followers employ to maximize the probability that change is in the public interest? The module has two fundamental purposes: to provide a greater theoretical understanding of the critical, indeed equal, role followers play in creating change; and to provide practical pointers on how to play this particular part, the part of follower, wisely and well.
