Examines the effectiveness of various strategies for equalizing opportunity among children in societies where parents have very unequal levels of income, wealth, education, and cognitive skill. Gives particular attention to whether and how racial hierarchies, residential segregation, the organization of formal education, and the degree of income inequality affect the distribution of children’s economic opportunities. Prerequisite:Normally limited to students who have taken HLE-511, but if space permits others with appropriate background may enroll with the permission of the instructor. Readings require at least two semesters of statistics or equivalent experience. Also offered by the Sociology Department as Soc 296b.
