Description

Information systems are a critical infrastructure for any enterprise today. Acquiring such systems is complex and difficult, particularly given the constraints of the public sector, and the rate of acquisition failure is very high. This course provides managers of public or private organizations an understanding of these complexities, and considers successful strategies for acquiring, maintaining, and evolving robust information systems. The course examines the factors that contribute to failure or under performance, and then presents a ‘users tour’ through the current technology trends and options.  The course is case-based, with four sessions to review technology, acquisition, effective and defective programs, and how to evaluate a system. The course has two themes. The first concerns accurately embedding business processes in a system, and using information systems to both support and drive organizational performance. The second, how non-IT managers can determine whether to continue, modify, or terminate an information system program.
