Of interest to me (for obvious reasons) is a paper by a PhD out of Brown, Michal Jerzmanowski who has a paper entitled "Empirics of Hills, Plateaus, Mountains, and Plains: A Markov Switching Approach to Growth" that takes a "states and transitions" approach to growth and makes it empirical and is very interesting.
