More information:
Mark Kramer has developed the concept of catalytic
philanthropy to argue that foundations can bring about
greater systemic impact if they deploy their funding in
ways that foster linkages among the great variety of
organizations that are essential to a problem’s resolution.
Large grants to single organizations will have less impact
than will grant-making strategies that encourage a
community of key actors act in shared purpose.
Mr. Kramer has described catalytic philanthropy in a
article in the most recent Stanford Social Innovation
Review. Mr. Kramer’s remarks will be followed by brief
comments by Steven Lawry, Senior Research Fellow at the
Hauser Center.
Mr. Kramer is the Managing Director of FSG Social Impact
Advisors. FSG was founded in 1999 as Foundation Strategy
Group by Mr. Kramer and Harvard Business School Professor
Michael Porter. A nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, FSG
provides consulting services to philanthropies and
nonprofit organizations on strategy, implementation,
evaluation, social entrepreneurship, cross-sector
collaboration and other topics. FSG has offices in Boston,
San Francisco, Seattle and Geneva. Mr. Kramer also serves
as a Senior Fellow in the Corporate Social Responsibility
Initiative at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and
Government at the Harvard Kennedy School.
