Visiting Fellows in Residence Opportunity

The Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations seeks to accelerate critical thinking about the role and leadership of nonprofit and non-governmental organizations through research, education and practice. The Visiting Fellows in Residence Program is for non-Harvard scholars who wish to pursue their own work while in residence at the Hauser Center in association with Harvard-affiliated faculty. The Hauser Visiting Fellows have strong intellectual interests grounded either in significant practical accomplishments within the nonprofit sector or in scholarly inquiry into the nature or dynamics of nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations in the US and internationally. Visiting Fellows are encouraged in their work and affiliation with the Center to bridge all three levels of academic work: research, teaching and practical application.

Visiting Fellowships typically extend from September until May of one academic year, although applications for a shorter fellowship may be considered. Affiliation with the Hauser Center implies a close working engagement with the individuals and activities at the Center.

Applicants must have at least one Harvard faculty sponsor and are expected to spend a significant amount of time in residence at the Center and participate in its intellectual life. The faculty sponsor must be a Hauser Center affiliate. Please see a list of faculty affiliates here.

Visiting Fellows are responsible for securing their own funding to support the full costs of their fellowship which includes shared office space and access to Harvard resources (e.g. libraries, events and facilities). Costs for an academic year are approximately $8,900.

The program uses the following criteria:
• Intellectual accomplishments of the applicant and quality of proposed projects.
• Fit of interests and projects with interests and activities of the Hauser Center Faculty and Associates; priority will be given to scholars whose work intersects with the domains of practice.
• Likelihood of individual's future contribution to nonprofit scholarship, teaching or service.
• Likelihood of individual’s future contribution to the intellectual community within the Center and the University.

To be eligible, please file a formal application. Applications may be submitted at any time online, but decisions will be announced two times a year: February and June.
