Harvard Kennedy School MLD 815M: New Frontiers in Philanthropy, Social Enterprise and Impact Investing
The primary purpose of this module is to introduce and critically analyze cutting-edge ideas in financial and organizational management for nonprofit organizations and social enterprises. Foundations, NGO's, policy makers, venture philanthropists and other "social good" enterprises are developing new tools and strategies to meet complex societal challenges. In this primer, we scrutinize the strengths and weaknesses of emerging strategies in the field to enhance capacity, reach and impact. Key questions include:
1. How do social enterprises determine their structure (e.g. nonprofit, for-profit, hybrid) and what are the costs and benefits associated with each option?
2. What is the impact of mission investing, program-related investing, and socially responsible investing and how do these tools advance the field?
3. What skills do the next generation of nonprofit/social enterprise leaders need to meet the challenges and opportunities that these new strategies present and how different are they from the past?
