Hauser Center Summer
Fellows 2011
The Hauser Center is pleased
to have supported the following Harvard students during
their summer internships with nonprofit, civil society, and
non-governmental organizations around the
world:
Ben Beachy is an
MPP student at Harvard Kennedy School, focusing on
international economic policy and development. He will
be in India working with ActionAid, an international
rights-based organization that partners with poor
communities to counter poverty. Ben will assist
ActionAid India in launching a national Land Rights
Secretariat, a new "knowledge hub" to support
small-scale farmers’ struggles against increasing land
grabs and decreasing public investment. Ben will
research the economic viability and food security
contributions of smallholder farming, and will help
map the proliferation of illicit land seizures. Prior
to studying at the Kennedy School, Ben spent six years
working as an economic policy analyst in Nicaragua and
a national grassroots organizer in Washington, DC with
the advocacy organization Witness for Peace.
Nick
Gerry-Bullard is a masters candidate in the
joint MPP/MBA program at Harvard Kennedy School and
Harvard Business School. He studied in the Science in
Society Program at Wesleyan University before moving
to New York to work in HIV/AIDS advocacy and social
policy research at the nonprofits Funders Concerned
About AIDS and MDRC. After a year as a Coro Fellow in
Public Affairs, he worked in the New York City Mayor's
Office, helping form public-private partnerships and
building performance measurement systems for NYC
Service, a citywide civic engagement and volunteerism
initiative. Among other activities this year, he
served as a Panel Manager for the 2011 Social
Enterprise Conference, creating a panel with
representatives from business, government, and the
nonprofit sector on best practices and challenges in
cross-sector environmental partnerships. He is
thrilled to return to the nonprofit sector this summer
to work on energy and environment policy at Civic
Exchange, a Hong Kong think tank, and is deeply
honored to serve as a Hauser Center Summer Fellow.

Arpana Pandey is
a student in the Master in Public Policy program at
the Harvard Kennedy School. She will be in Vietnam
this summer, working with ActionAid, a global
anti-poverty agency that promotes the rights of poor
and marginalized communities across the world. Arpana
will research and document urbanization trends in
Vietnam and analyze the potential ramifications for
the country’s ongoing poverty alleviation efforts. Her
research will form the basis of an ActionAid report
that will address the challenges of urban poverty and
inequality in rapidly changing and developing Vietnam.
Prior to Harvard Kennedy School, Arpana worked as an
International Economics Research Associate at the
Council on Foreign Relations in New York. She
graduated with a degree in Economics from Smith
College.
Natasha Sunderji
is a first year Masters in Public Policy student. She
will be working in Geneva with the Medicines Patent
Pool Foundation, an innovative ‘one-stop shop’ for
patent holders, generic manufacturers and
organizations engaged in research and development. The
Patent Pool aims to improve access to affordable and
appropriate HIV medicines in developing countries
through voluntary licensing of critical intellectual
property. Natasha will work with the Executive
Director and the Communications department in planning
mid and long term operations, enhancing the
Stakeholder Communications strategy, and undertaking
research projects in support of the Pool’s
implementation.
