given the costs and distances, are not able to attend
residential Executive Education programs offered by Harvard
Kennedy School.
Nonprofit Financial Stewardship: Concepts and
Techniques for Strategic Financial
Management
September 2 – October 24, 2008
An online program designed to help nonprofit and
non-governmental organization managers improve their
financial literacy. This program is designed to help
managers in nonprofit organizations understand the tools,
techniques, and concepts of good financial management.

Nonprofit Governance: Mobilizing Your
Board
October 27 – December 19, 2008
An online program designed to help executives of nonprofit
and non-governmental organizations engage their boards in
more consequential and meaningful work that produces
greater value for their organizations. The program is
designed specifically for executives in nonprofit and
non-governmental organizations who want to tap into the
full array of talent and energy within their boards.

Strategic Frameworks for
Nonprofit/Nongovernmental
Organizations
February 9 - April 24, 2009
This is a 10-week distance learning program for leaders of
nonprofits and NGOs in the developing world. The program
consists of five (5) two-week modules on topics including
strategy frameworks, mission statements, portfolio
management, marketing, and strategic positioning.
Participants will apply concepts developed at the Kennedy
School to challenges facing their individual organizations
using electronic workbooks and moderated discussion boards
where they will share their experiences and gain insights
from other leaders around the globe. Each two-week module
will culminate in a live discussion with faculty chair

Strategic Management for Leaders of
Non-Governmental Organizations
March
15 - March 21, 2009
This program is designed and taught by Harvard faculty and
researchers and offered at the Athens Information
Technology institute (AIT) in Athens, Greece, in
collaboration with the Kokkalis Foundation and the Middle
East Initiative at Harvard. The program is designed to give
NGO leaders from Southeastern and Eastern Europe, the
Eastern Mediterranean, and the Middle East the tools,
perspectives, and frameworks needed to strengthen their
organizations, engage constituent communities, and
cultivate long-term partnerships and commitments. The
program will be chaired by Christine Letts and faculty

Performance Measurement for Effective
Management of Nonprofit
Organizations
Developed jointly by Harvard Business School’s Social
Enterprise Initiative and Harvard University’s Hauser
Center for Nonprofit Organizations.

This program is designed to show nonprofit leaders how to
use performance measurement to enhance the effectiveness of
their organization. The program covers a range of
approaches that address the specific performance challenges
facing executives in the nonprofit world. The program is
designed for senior executives and other leaders of
nonprofit organizations around the world who are committed
to implementing effective performance measurement and
management in their organizations. The faculty chairs are
Christine Letts and Allen Grossman, and faculty include

Community
Problem-Solving: Skills for Civic
Leadership
This
program, held March 3-6, 2008, teaches teams of community
leaders the skills they need to effect deep change.
The program is designed by Harvard University’s John F.
Kennedy School of Government and the Community
Problem-Solving Project at MIT’s Department of Urban
Studies and Planning. Community Problem-Solving is
for key decision makers from community-based organizations,
public agencies, faith-based organizations, elected
offices, and businesses – including board members, CEOs,
outreach and advocacy directors, and corporate social
responsibility liaisons. Participants will learn both
practical skills and theoretical frameworks that will
strengthen their ability to exercise effective civic
leadership together. Faculty include

their boards will find this new governance approach

Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit
Management
In
a time of shifting demands for services, changing operating
environments, and recurring financial pressures, the skills
of nonprofit leaders are put to the test. SPNM, a joint
program with the Social Enterprise Initiative, provides
executives with the opportunity to examine their missions
and develop new strategies. The program guides nonprofit
leaders as they explore proactive methods for mastering
nonprofit leadership. HBS faculty and colleagues challenge
participants to strengthen their ability to improve the
effectiveness of their organizations. Designed for
executives responsible for organization direction, mission,
policies, and major programs, SPNM is suitable for leaders
of public-serving nonprofits. It is not targeted at
industry/trade associations, management support
organizations, or consulting firms.

Governing for Nonprofit Excellence: Critical
Issues for Board Leadership
Nonprofit
organizations require strong, innovative leadership. This
program is designed to maximize the contributions of
individual nonprofit board members. Participants are
challenged to examine their role and the role of their
boards in improving organizational effectiveness. By
examining issues of critical concern to board leaders, the
program prepares participants for strategic planning and
organizational transformation. Board members gain skills
needed to forge effective relationships with CEOs,
structure and manage important alliances and achieve
financial sustainability. Designed for nonprofit board
members assuming board leadership roles, the program meets
the needs of leaders from a variety of organizations, such
as those focused on social services, education, healthcare,
arts and culture, community and economic development, and
international development.
Program dates: December 7-10, 2008. Faculty has
