Do boards of directors contribute to the tremendous variation in quality performance that now characterizes U.S. hospitals? Epstein will present on a study that explores the connection between the behaviors and attributes of hospital boards and the quality of care at their institutions.
Taking advantage of newly available data that track the quality of care at U.S. hospitals, Epstein and Ashish Jha (Associate Professor, Department of Health Policy and Management, HSPH) conducted a national survey of Board Chairs to identify the knowledge, practices and behaviors associated with high- and low-performing hospitals.
Their findings suggest new strategies for stimulating interest in higher quality of care among board members, and could help the boards of lower performing hospitals engage with their institutions to improve the quality of their hospitals’ care – thereby raising the floor on performance nationally.
