Harvard University January 21-23, 2011
The conference will focus on developments in civil society in China but with a specific focus on the types and roles of nonprofit organizations. It will convene leading scholars of China studies from the U.S. in jointly building a systematic understanding of the nonprofit sector. They will do so from the perspectives of history, public policy, political science, sociology, anthropology and law. The purpose of this meeting is purely exploratory, to reflect upon recent research, to examine key issues in the field, and to assemble a possible future teaching and research agenda. Meanwhile, the conference has invited famous nonprofit leaders and scholars from China to share about the latest from the field in China.
Registration is required for public participation. For more information, check http://www.hks.harvard.edu/hauser/conference-on-civil-society/agenda/

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet’s visit to China once again attracted the world’s attention to philanthropy in China. Does China have the necessary infrastructures ready to support bold giving initiatives? The recently established China Foundation Center serves as a mirror to the status of philanthropy in China. Following the model of the Foundation Center in New York City, with the most influential figures from China’s nonprofit sector behind it, the China Foundation Center is dedicated to building transparency and accountability of foundations and other nonprofits in China. The China Central Television covered the initiative in its prestigious program “Economy Half Hour” and conducted an interview its founder Xu Yongguang. Dr. Zhuang, Executive Director of the initiative is going to share the challenges and ambitions of the China Foundation Center, and to throw light on the landscape of philanthropy in China.
