Making Sense of Arab Labor Markets: The Enduring Legacy of Dualism

The second seminar of the fall 2013 study group, "The Politics and Economics of Transition in the Middle East," with Professor Ragui Assad. More information on this semester’s study group series can be found here.

The use of public sector employment by Arab regimes to appease politically significant groups in the post-independence period has led to oversized public sectors, high youth unemployment, especially among the educated, inappropriate investments in human capital and stagnant rates of female participation in economic activity.
