Powerful Storytelling with a Video Camera: Part 1 - Basic Principles, Digital Communications Workshop with Franco Sacchi, doc

This session provides a framework and guidance to help students plan and accomplish effective video documentation of development experiences and topics.   Principles are illustrated by examples drawn from films that the Development Communications Workshop has made for Kennedy School faculty and others.   Charles Mann, founder of the Development Communications Workshop, is a development economist with extensive field experience with the Rockefeller Foundation and the Harvard Institute for International Development.  He created DevCom to work with filmmakers to help students use video effectively for development and also to produce documentaries for teaching about development issues. DevCom’s films are distributed by Documentary Educational Resources, Inc. (www.DER.orgFranco Sacchi, DevCom Creative Director, is an award winning documentary filmmaker and educator.  His feature length documentaries have been shown at film festivals worldwide and aired on national and international broadcast channels including the Sundance Channel, South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC-1), SKY ARTS (UK), TBS Latin America among many others. Franco has over 15 years of experience teaching documentary filmmaking and editing.  (www.francosacchi.com). Catherine Rielly, DevCom Executive Producer, is an experienced development economist and teacher.  After using DevCom films in the classroom, she raised funds to commission a DevCom film for a rural community development curriculum.  She is the Executive Director of Rubia, a non-profit organization that promotes women's education and empowerment in Afghanistan through the sale of traditional embroidery.
