Cambridge, MA—The Center for Public Leadership(CPL) at Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) announced today that Tufts University president emeritus Lawrence S. Bacow M.P.P. 1976, Ph.D. 1978, has joined the Center for Public Leadership (CPL) community as its inaugural Leader-in-Residence. Bacow’s two-year appointment begins this summer.
Bacow is known as a prominent expert on environmental policy and environmental dispute resolution, as well as a pioneering champion of broadened access to higher education and a scholar of technology’s role in expanding learning opportunities. He served as president of Tufts University from September 2001 through July 2011.
"I have long admired Larry Bacow for his inspiring and creative leadership, and I am excited that he will be joining us at the Kennedy School," said HKS Dean David T. Ellwood.
The leadership of the Center -- its co-directors Max Bazerman and David Gergen, Public Service Professor of Public Leadership at HKS, and executive director Patricia Bellinger -- have expressed unanimous enthusiasm.
“Larry is a legend,” added CPL executive director Bellinger, who works closely with Bazerman on shaping CPL’s leadership programming and intellectual life. “It’s a thrill to be able to share his many talents with our students—and theirs with him.”
An alumnus of HKS and of Harvard Law School, where he received his J.D., Bacow will contribute as an active member to CPL’s community of scholarship, teaching, and practice. He plans to explore ways in which CPL can further integrate technology into its leadership development offerings and delivery, and plans to offer co-curricular leadership training to HKS students on issues at the nexus of leadership and technology. He will likely also contribute to leadership development programming for CPL’s community of over 70 fellows—HKS degree candidates with demonstrated leadership potential who receive scholarships and robust co-curricular programming through the Center’s named fellowship programs—during the academic year.
Max Bazerman, Jesse Isidor Straus Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and co-director of CPL, said, "He brings an unparalleled understanding of the complex, 21st-century issues that our students—and our Center—will only confront more frequently in the years ahead.”
A member of the Harvard Corporation and the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Bacow is looking forward to joining the CPL community.
“I have long been impressed by HKS in general—and CPL in particular—for its commitment not just to the study of what makes leadership work, but to preparing ambitious, smart young people to take on the difficult practice of leadership throughout their professional lives,” Bacow reflected. “I am excited to return home to my old graduate school and share in this important work with such a dedicated organization of students and scholars.”
