Cambridge, MA — Wangari Maathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize, will deliver a public address September 30 at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. “Empowering Women and Children One Tree at a Time” will begin at 4 p.m. in the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum, 79 JFK Street, Cambridge.
Maathai is the first woman from Africa to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1977, she launched a broad-based, grassroots organization called the Green Belt Movement (GBM). In 2002 Maathai was elected to Kenya’s parliament and in 2003 she was appointed assistant minister for environment and natural resources in Kenya’s ninth parliament.
