Esther Babb
University of Chicago
Esther is a fourth year student at the University of Chicago.  She will receive her B.A. from the University of Chicago in Economics, in June, 2000.  Over the years at the University, she has been involved in extracurricular activities such as the Blue Gargoyle Tutoring Program, Women Youth Supporting Each Other (WYSE), Neighborhood Schools Tutoring Program, Women’s Athletic Association and varsity track and cross country.  This year she was elected vice president and chairman of the Women’s Athletic Association and WYSE, respectively.   Her major interests are social welfare policy, urban poverty, and neighborhood effects on the development of children.  For her last year at the University, she plans to expand and publicize WYSE (mentoring program) to other institutions in Chicago in effort to reach out to other young adolescents who do not have the resources to make proactive life choices.

Aisha Haynie
Harvard University
Aisha was born in Columbia, South Carolina and moved with her mother and sister to Subic Bay Naval Base, Philippines at the age of 7.  They remained in the Philippines where Aisha attended DODDS (department of defense dependent schools) schools until age 13.  Her family then moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina where she attended public school.  In the 11th grade, she attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, a residential and state-supported high school located in Durham, NC.  Presently, she is studying abroad at St. Catherine's College, Oxford University.  She will return to Harvard University in the fall to complete her undergraduate degree in sociology.  After graduating from Harvard, she plans to pursue her career goal as a health care policy activist specializing in Sickle Cell Disease treatment and care distribution.

Janéa Juanita Jackson
University of Pennsylvania
Janéa is a native of Los Angeles, California.  She is currently an incoming junior at the University of Pennsylvania. Janéa is majoring in sociology, concentrating in the structure of opportunity and equality, with a double minor in African-American studies and photography.  She has most enjoyed her community-based research exploring education, health, and youth culture in an area in West Philadelphia known as  "The Bottoms."  While interning this summer with Motivational Educational Entertainment (MEE) in Philadelphia, Janéa looks forward to furthering her knowledge in youth culture and empowerment. Currently she is working on a MEE community service project aiming to use traditional and non-traditional marketing methods to increase awareness of emergency contraceptives (also known as "The Morning After Pill") in African-American women ages 18 to 30 residing in Philadelphia.  In her spare time, Janéa operates a small business teaching swimming lessons to low-income children and adults.

Rose Mirembe Kakoza
Harvard College
Rose is currently a rising junior at Harvard College.  One of five children, she has two older sisters and a younger sister and brother.  She was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Springfield, Virginia where her family still lives today.  Her parents were born and raised in Uganda and came to this country about 25 years ago.  In the future Rose hopes to become a pediatrician.  Her dream is to open up a clinic
for teenage mothers and their children.  She enjoys reading, she loves basketball (more as an observer than a player), she enjoys working with children, and she really enjoys dancing.  She adds, "I look forward to meeting everyone and hopefully you'll know a little more about me after the program is over :) !"

Claudia O'Brien
Columbia University
Claudia was born and raised in Brooklyn New York. Her parents (immigrants from Trinidad) still live in Brooklyn, and she has an older sister who lives in Johannesberg, South Africa.  She  graduated from Columbia University in 1997, with a BA in psychology.   Claudia played basketball throughout her high school and college years, but unfortunately did not go on to the WNBA.  She is currently a research assistant at the Center for Children and Families at Teachers College, Columbia University.  Under the direction of Dr. Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, she is working on a national evaluation study of the Early Head Start Program.  She credits her  work at the center for introducing her to various ways in which social policy research can be linked to developmental psychology.   Claudia developed an interest in policy implementation and evaluation and would like to develop a program that focuses on high school to employment transitions for young adults, especially men.

Peter Siu
MIT
Peter Siu was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Toronto, Canada. He is a fresh graduate of MIT, where he majored in Urban Studies/Planning and focused on economic development and poverty. During college, Peter also explored journalism, planning, teaching and web design though various jobs and internships. Perhaps his favorite internship was at Asiaweek Magazine in Hong Kong; there, he interviewed, researched and wrote news stories– many of which were about corruption and government reform. This summer, he is assisting with the research of two Harvard professors. Prof. Kathy Swartz at the School of Public Health is looking at the financing of births by Medicaid. Economics Prof. Richard Freeman is studying the college anti-sweatshop movement and trying to understand which students join and why they participate. Beginning September– if all goes as planned– Peter will be on scholarship for a year in Beijing to learn Mandarin. Afterwards, he hopes to continue doing research on either labor or social/political participation issues.

Roberta (Robin) Stennet
Princeton University
Robin is from Mandeville, Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans. This fall she will be a junior at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey in the Politics Department.  She is also pursuing certificates in African-American Studies, French and Spanish. She is  very interested in the social and political problems facing bi-racial and multi-racial persons in the United States, and how they have been affected by the politics and customs of the past. Outside of academics, she enjoys playing sports, drawing,  and photography.

Sandra Taddeucci
New York University
Sandra will start her senior year at New York University in the fall.   She is an economics major and has a double minor in politics and women's studies, contributing to a fairly broad understanding and interest in  current social issues and government.  She is a New York City native and is very interested in NYC politics. She will be interning this summer at the New York City Council where she hopes to obtain hands-on experience in local government.   She plans to attend law school after she graduates.

Ourania (Rani) Tserotas
Harvard College
Rani, a junior at Harvard-Radcliffe, grew up in Chicago.   Her own experiences in an inner-city public high school have motivated her own passion to work within and provide support for public schools.    She is pursuing a B.A. in Sociology with a Teacher Certification to teach elementary school.   She has worked as a teacher and tutor for Latino immigrant students in the Foreman High School in Chicago; Youth Coordinator for the Cambridge Peace and Justice Corps; a teacher at the Pine Point Tribal Community School in Minnesota, where she tutored elementary youth with emotional behavior disorders, learning disabilities, and fetal alcohol syndrome; and a teacher of English at the New School: Juan Ponce de Leon in Guaynabo, PR.    Fluent in Spanish and Greek, Ourania's other interests include reading, drawing, modern dance, and playing the trombone.

Craig Winters
The Johns Hopkins University
Craig,  21, hails from Miami, Florida.  Craig graduated this May from The Johns Hopkins University as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and earned a B.A. in Political Science with a concentration in social and political institutions.  Beginning this October, Craig will enter the M.Phil. program in Politics at Oxford University, England, as one of the 1999-2001 British Marshall Scholars.  While at Johns Hopkins, Craig worked with Prof. Milton Cummings in Political Science and Prof. Andrew Cherlin to explore issues such as the evolution of education policy at the U.S. Department of Education, the politics of education reform (with specific reference to vouchers and charter schools), "fair-share" low-income housing programs, and legislation promoting community revitalization.  In the future, Craig would like to continue to explore the linkages between poverty, education, and politics (hopefully as a Ph.D. student), and would also like to continue to stay involved with the middle school mentoring and inner-city tennis programs he founded.
