Harvard University Electronic Communication and Responsible Use
Harvard neither sanctions nor censors individual expression of opinion on its systems. The same standards of behavior, however, are expected in the use of electronic mail as in the use of telephones and written and oral communication.
Therefore electronic mail, like telephone messages, must be neither obscene nor harassing. Similarly, messages must not misrepresent the identity of the sender and should not be sent as chain letters or broadcast indiscriminately to large numbers of individuals.
This prohibition includes unauthorized mass electronic mailings. For example, E-Mail on a given topic that is sent to large numbers of recipients should in general be directed only to those who have indicated a willingness to receive such E-Mail
Copyright Information
Harvard's Digital Millenium Copyright Act - Answers to frequently asked questions about copyright. Copyright issues have become one of the most important on line debates. Laws are increasing falling on the side of copyright protection; information that you post to a website or reproduced needs to be considered carefully before they are distributed.
HKS IT Services Responsible Use
In addition to the standards of behavior addressed above, HKS IT services enforces the following: Only work related documents should be stored on HKS servers (personal files may be stored on local hard drives).
- All confidential, financial, and HR data should be stored on a special secure server with limited access.
- Access to secure data must be approved by supervisors or owner of data.
- Large unauthorized mass electronic mailings are prohibited. These mass mailings are considered spam.
Security
IT reserves the right to disconnect any connection from the network if the connection is, or threatening to, compromise the HKS network for reasons of hacking, interfering scripts, or any other unauthorized security or performance compromise. Student computers that have been comprimised should go to the Student Computer Lab for more information
Mass E-Mailing
Mass E-mailing HKS distribution lists is strongly discouraged. There are, however, several alternatives if you wish to contact your fellow students.
- HKS databases and the HKS Today E-mail have been created for distributing information and announcing events. Students can add events to a student calendar on the intranet and subscribe to an RSS feed of student events.
- IT Services maintains discussion boards on the intranet for students. New topics are often initiated, and range from politics to leisure activities.
Students may also read our E-mail policy for more information.
Websites
Student websites should be used for personal communication and academic reasons. IT Services reserves the right to close any site set up for E-Commerce, to support a political party, or one that contains other inappropriate material.
Websites will be created for student organizations and clubs. All requests must be approved through the web request form.
Taubman Carrels
Study Carrels in the Taubman Rotunda should be reserved for use. If you have not reserved a Carrel please turn it over to those who have requested a reservation.
