Bulgarian Prime Minister Stanishev to deliver Keynote lecture: Bulgaria as a Stabilizing Factor in South-East Europe and the Black Sea Region

Stanishev

H.E. Sergei Stanishev is the current prime minister of the Republic of Bulgaria. He holds a PhD in history from Moscow State University, and went on to specialize in international relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Stanishev was first elected to the Bulgarian National Assembly in 2001; while serving as chairman of the Coalition for Bulgaria Parliamentary Group, he was elected Prime Minister by the Bulgarian Parliament in 2005. In his presentation, the Prime Minister will focus on Bulgaria's role as a stabilizing factor in the new regional challenges facing South-East Europe and the Black Sea Region.

The Kokkalis Program will host the lecture on Monday, September 29th at 4:30pm at the Taubman Building.

2009 Graduate Student Workshop Call for Papers

The Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe, John F. Kennedy School of Government, and Southeastern Europe Study Group, Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Harvard University, will hold the 11th Kokkalis Graduate Student Workshop on February 12 and 13, 2009.

Doctoral students are invited to submit proposals for papers to be delivered at the workshop. Proposals should be a maximum of 500 words and should fall into one of three specified thematic units.

Born in Prishtina, Bajraktari is currently a student in the Master in Public Policy program, from which he will graduate in June 2009.

Kosmas Kaprinis
A native of Thessaloniki, Kaprinis will enroll in the Master in Public Policy program in September 2008.

George Saravelos
Born in Thessaloniki, Saravelos will enroll in the Master in Public Administration in International Development program in September 2008.

Ussal Sahbaz
A native of Ankara, Sahbaz will enroll in the Master in Public Administration in International Development program in September 2008.

Jelena Sesar
Sesar, a native of Sarajevo, will enroll in the Mason Fellows/Mid-career Masters in Public Administration program in July 2008.


Turkey's Economy: Key Achievements, Challenges, & Medium Term Outlook

Delivering a message of prosperity and openness, Turkish Minister of State Mehmet Şimşek gave a major public address at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government on March 19.  His visit and lecture, “Turkey’s Economy: Key Achievements, Challenges, & Medium Term Outlook”  received an enthusiastic reception by Harvard students, faculty and senior administrators. The event, which was sponsored by Harvard’s Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe, highlighted Turkey’s recent economic achievements, priorities for reform, and the outlook for the economy.

Minister Şimşek has served as state minister in charge of the economy since August 29, 2007. Prior to his election, he was the chief economist and strategist for emerging Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Merrill Lynch in London.
