Why I chose KSG:

I feel that we often do not approach public problems holistically to examine characteristics, relationships, and the spectrum of possible solutions within the relevant political and financial constraints. We accept what "experts" in a particular discipline say, or succumb to the stipulations and "wisdom" of donors who claim to know more about our countries than we do! I wanted an interdisciplinary program of study which would equip me with practical skills and analytical tools to work on public policy issues in East Africa. The MPP covers economics, statistics, management and strategy, negotiation, communication, politics, financial management... and courses in many policy areas. It also gives you the opportunity to work on a real issue for a client organization under the guidance of a faculty advisor. In addition, KSG was much more internationally focused than the other schools I considered.

My needs as an African:

Academically - a program of study that has high standards and is relevant to/focused on the policy issues that are most important to our continent. Personally - a supportive community of friends and colleagues with similar passions, engaging life experiences and enough humour to survive the Boston winter! I had no problem finding all of this at KSG. In addition, I was able to take advantage of Harvard's excellence in other areas through a dual masters program.

To my fellow Africans:

If you're looking for a public policy school that combines academic rigour, structure, flexibility and a strong international flavour, you should definitely consider one of KSG's many graduate programs. At a practical level, it helps to contact a current student or talk to alumni. Finances are a big issue for most of us, but there are scholarship and grant programs available from many US sources - so don't be overwhelmed, and start early!
