New “Tiananmen Papers” Reveal U.S. Perceptions
The U.S. “Tiananmen Papers”, published by the National Security Archives, this electronic compilation of newly declassified U.S. government documents provides useful primary information concerning the “Tiananmen massacre” that took place in Beijing and elsewhere in China during the first half of June 1989. Consisting mainly of the CIA’s reports and cables from the US embassy in Beijing, this significant selection of first-hand sources examines through a US prism, the decision-making process of the Chinese Communist Party Political Bureau Standing Committee in the course and aftermath of protests and political disorder.
