Good Shepherd, Storm of Emotions, El Norte and more: new DVDs

These titles were recently added to the KSG Library’s ‘Reel Politik’ collection of DVDs:

Good Shepherd

Edward Wilson, the only witness to his father’s suicide and a top student and member of the Skull and Bones Society at Yale, is a morally upright young man who values honor and discretion. These qualities lead to his being recruited for a career in the newly-founded Office of Strategic Services (OSS). During World War II, he is sent to England where his ideals gradually turn to suspicion and distrust. As the OSS evolves into the CIA and the Cold War heats up, he becomes an influential veteran operative involved in many covert operations from the Bay of Pigs to secret assassinations. His dedication to his work does not come without a price though, as it increasingly conflicts with his ideals and distances his relationship with his family, particularly his son, who eventually joins the CIA in an attempt to win his father’s love and respect.

Storm of Emotions

“The 1982 peace agreement with Egypt obliged thousands of people to leave their homes in the Sinai desert. From the options they were given by the Israeli government, many chose “Gush Katif” in the Gaza Strip as their new home. To progress the peace process, the Israeli government ordered the evacuation of the Gaza Strip on August 2005. This decision created political and social turmoil. The evacuation was to be the most complex and sensitive mission ever to be undertaken by the police forces. This movie is about emotions, beliefs, conscience and true brotherly love.”

El Norte

Mayan Indian peasants are tired of being thought of as nothing more than manual laborers. They organize an effort to improve their lot in life, but are discovered by the Guatemalan army. After the army destroys their village and family, Enrique and Rosa, a teenage brother and sister, who barely escaped the massacre, decide they must flee to United States. After receiving clandestine help from friends and humorous advice from a veteran immigrant on strategies for traveling, they make their way by truck, bus and other means to Los Angeles, where they try to make a new life as young, uneducated, and illegal immigrants.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley

Driven by a deep sense of duty and a love for his country, Damien abandons his burgeoning career as a doctor and joins his brother, Teddy in a dangerous and violent fight for freedom in Ireland in 1920. As the Irish freedom fighters’ bold tactics bring the British to a breaking point, both sides finally agree to a treaty to end the bloodshed. But, despite the apparent victory, civil war erupts and families who fought side by side find themselves pitted against one another, putting their loyalties to the ultimate test.

Caramel

A Beirut beauty salon becomes a treasured meeting place for several generations of women who meet there daily. The women come from various walks of life, to talk, seek advice and confide in one another. Each has their own quirks and problems that they must deal with.
