“Observations from the Middle East,” a Belfer Center Student Session with Rolf Mowatt-Larssen

The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a student seminar with Rolf Mowatt-Larssen, Belfer Center Senior Fellow, in the Belfer Center Library (L369). For the past eight months, Rolf has been has been living in Amman, Jordan, writing and observing the situation in the Middle East from the inside out.  His insights are buttressed by decades of intelligence and international of experience. Rolf is a 23 year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency whose last position in government was as Director of Intelligence and Counterintelligence at the U.S. Department of Energy. As a CIA intelligence officer, Rolf served in various domestic and international posts, to include Chief of the Europe Division in the Directorate of Operations, Chief of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Department, Counterterrorist Center, and Deputy Associate Director of Central Intelligence for Military Support. His overseas assignments include Stockholm (1984-1987), Moscow (1988-1990, 1992-1994), Athens (1990-1992), Yerevan (1992), Zurich (1994-1996) and Oslo (1998-2000). Rolf has been a Senior Fellow at Belfer since 2008 having authored several ground breaking papers during his three-plus years at the center.  An expert on nuclear terrorism, Rolf revealed the depth of terrorist efforts toward a nuclear capability in thought provoking reports, such as Islam and the Bomb and Al Qaeda Weapons of Mass Destruction Threat: Hype or Reality? Rolf is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served for six years in the Army as an Armor officer.  He is a recipient of the CIA Director's Award, the George W. Bush Award for Excellence in Counterterrorism, the Secretary of Energy's Exceptional Service Medal, the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, Secretary of Defense Civilian Distinguished Service Medal, and the National Intelligence Superior Performance Medal, among others. RSVP REQUIRED!belfer_events@hks.harvard.edu As space is limited for this event, RSVPs will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
