Film has a unique ability to convey the essence of a social challenge in ways that arouse people’s emotions, change their perspectives, and motivate them to act. This conversation with Sheila Johnson and frequent collaborator, documentary film director Susan Koch will focus on their partnership in documentary and narrative filmmaking. Clips from their documentary Kicking It—which has been described as an act of "filmanthropy," using film to catalyze social change and actively give back to society—will be shown and Ms. Johnson will talk about her current project, major-motion picture, The Butler. How they work together as a filmmaking team from concept to completion will be covered; including where ideas come from, how money is raised, how production proceeds, and distribution is accomplished. Questions from students on how to get started or involved with documentary filmmaking will be welcome.
