This session provides a framework and guidance to help
students plan and accomplish effective video documentation of
development experiences and topics. Principles are
illustrated by examples drawn from DevCom’s
filmmaking. Franco Sacchi is a documentary filmmaker and
teacher. His film, Waiting for Armageddon, is in theatrical
release and his This is Nollywood was featured at the 2007 Arusha
Technology, Entertainment, Design Global Conference. A
long-time Mentor at DevCom, he is also a Visiting Artist at Boston
University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts. Catherine Rielly, experienced development
economist, teacher, DevCom Executive Producer, is the President of
Rubia, a non-profit organization whose mission is to develop
economic opportunities through craft heritage, to support
education, and to promote health and well-being for Afghan women
and their families.
Charles Mann is a development economist with
extensive field experience, 7 years in Turkey, followed by many
years in Africa. Now retired from a career with the Harvard
Institute for International Development and The Rockefeller
Foundation, he is the founder of www.DevComWorkshop.org , an
organization created with filmmakers to help students use video
effectively for development and also to produce documentaries about
development in Africa and Latin America.
