Maximalism and Retrenchment: How America Overdoes Both

The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Director's Seminar with Ambassador Stephen Sestanovich, George F. Kennan Senior Fellow for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Council on Foreign Relations, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
Stephen Sestanovich is the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis professor of international diplomacy at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, and the George F. Kennan Senior Fellow for Russian and Eurasian studies at the Council on Foreign Relations.  His book Maximalist: America in the World from Truman to Obama has just been published by Knopf. 
From 1997 to 2001, he served as U.S. ambassador-at-large and special adviser to the Secretary of State for the former Soviet Union.
Prior to joining the State Department, Ambassador Sestanovich directed work on Soviet (later, Russian and Eurasian) affairs at two of Washington's leading public policy think-tanks, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
From 1984 to 1987, he served as senior director for policy development at the National Security Council. He was a member of the State Department's policy planning staff from 1981 to 1984 and senior legislative assistant to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan from 1980 to 1981.
Before coming to Washington, DC, Ambassador Sestanovich was assistant professor of political science at the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research (1978–80) and visiting assistant professor of political science at Columbia University (1979–80).
He received his BA from Cornell University and his PhD from Harvard University. His writing has appeared in the National Interest, Foreign Affairs, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, American Interest, New Republic, POLITICO, and other publications. Ambassador Sestanovich is a member of the board of directors of the National Endowment for Democracy. As space is limited for this event, RSVPs will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Belfer Center Seminars are strictly off-the-record.
